The ascension of Jesus Christ was an important and significant miracle: in his Gospel account, Luke simply records, "He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven." (Chapter 24:50,51). With all the authority He had now, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven in the attitude of blessing His disciples. Here Luke adds, “He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight”.
The cloud appears many times in the Bible, covering the glory of God. It was in a cloud that God appeared to the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration (Luke 9:35). It was not an atmospheric cloud, but a cover to hide from human sight the glory of the Father as He received His Son. When He came into the world, He was wrapped in swaddling cloths (Luke 2:12) – on returning to heaven He was wrapped in a cloud of glory.
Immediately two heavenly messengers stood by to inform the disciples that this same Jesus (whose name means "Saviour") would return the same way as they saw him go (Revelation 19: 11-16).
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
Act 1:10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,
Act 1:11 who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."
